Blooming April

Springing into April brings the cycle of life suddenly before your eyes!! Observation is an extremely vital element this month. Our outdoor detectives have witnessed the hatching of Praying Mantis in our green house.

Praying Mantis are beautiful insects that have a huge appetite. They help to control insect pests in an organic way. Praying Mantis are strictly carnivorous and feed on almost any insect that they can overcome.

We attached two egg cases in our greenhouse above some plants. When hatching occurs, the babies will crawl out through tiny flaps in the egg case and suspend themselves from silky threads. After a few hours, the long legged young will dry out and disperse, leaving little to no evidence of their appearance.

Ladybugs have also been released into our greenhouse to protect the fruits and vegetables from harmful insects. Ladybugs love to eat aphids, mealy bugs, spider mites, thrips and other soft body insects. Our backyard detectives had so much fun releasing over three thousand ladybugs into our outdoor classroom.

Ms. Barbara has worked with our children this week on transplanting. The children have learned that the plants have been growing and needed to have more space for the roots to expand; therefore, they can continue to grow big and strong like our children.

There’s always something to explore in our outdoor classroom!

The most exciting thing the children have been exploring is the hummingbird family which visits our greenhouse daily!

Some facts about the hummingbird that we have learned are:

  1. Hummingbirds are small, colorful birds with iridescent feathers.
  2. Their name comes from the fact that they flap their wings so fast (about 80 times per second) that they make a humming noise.
  3. Hummingbirds can fly right, left, up, down, backwards, and even upside down.
  4. They are also able to hover by flapping their wings in a figure-8 pattern.
  5. They have a specialized long, tapered bill that is used to obtain nectar from the center of long, tubular flowers.
  6. The hummingbird’s feet are used for perching only, and are not used for hopping or walking.
  7. Hummingbirds primarily eat flower nectar, tree sap, insects and pollen.

December is always remembered

December always brings a special kindness in the air, our pinecones are decorated with care, and all of the children cannot wait to share. Thanks to Ms. Barbara we always have lots of fun, but without her we would never get done!

P1000554P1000574P1000572P1000550P1000544P1000545

Our greenhouse still flourishes under December’s brisk air. It’s cold outside, but not in there! Remember our children always need encouragement like plants need soil and water, it helps them grow inside and out.

Good choices help to develop an independent mind that allows the children to feel empowered. Think about how much better you feel when you have a choice in what you are doing!

January

January is just around he corner, it will bring eggshell grinding. Eggshells bring natural nutrients back into the soil. This will be an experiment in progress, so if you remember please send us your eggshells.
